Sign Writer at FLM Access Park

Gavin Little has been with Food Lover’s Market for 21-and-a-half years as a Sign Writer at FLM Access Park store. As he says, “My intention initially wasn’t to stay this long but as time goes on, you don’t realise how quickly time flies. Because this is a family owned-business, we (the staff) know the bosses on a first name bases.
Therefore, I’d say the vibe in stores is somewhat like being a part of a close-knit community or a family even though we’re not related, we bond in a similar way. So it’s difficult to decide to leave the ‘family’ you’ve gotten to know”. In his 21+ years, he has worked under many different managers, including Mr Ricciardi, Vito Polera, Norman Woods, Roger Boltman, Anwar Domingo, Dane Coppin, Miriam Naidoo, and now Alex Polizzi. We interviewed him to find out what a day in his life is all about.

Gavin, what is a ‘normal’ day in your life like as a Sign Writer?
On a normal Monday, I change the advert prices of the previous weeks advert lines both indoors and outside on the road and I get the new ad lines sorted for the new week. I place orders for materials such as paint, correx, koki’s, chalk, etc. I also design the new advert header boards for in-store and for the point-of-sale boards. Every day is different. It’s not always the same thing even though it’s the same type of work. I write pieces or tickets for various departments, and make price changes, if needed, for items that come off the truck from the market – and this carries on throughout the week.

What do you love about your job?
I’d say it’s basically helping people all day because the staff need price changes or price tickets, so they are actually my customers.

What is your least favourite aspect of the job?
Repeated changing of the same boards when people can’t make up their minds where the stock should be placed, but that’s part of the job I guess.

What do you believe is the most important part of your job?
I see an advertisement as a calling card to call customers into the shop and my job is a part of that process.

What do you like doing after work on a normal day?
Getting home to my family and spending time with them especially since we now have a new addition to the family, my second granddaughter. The things I enjoy when I get home are watching TV series, movies, making food, social media surfing, listening to music, dabbling in mechanics by working on my own car, which is what I do most of the time over the weekends.

What are your future aspirations?
I would like to learn more about web designing and computer graphics; and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Fruit & Veg for giving me the job I have, for allowing me to work here and earn a fixed income in order to support my family and help me accumulate things needed in my household over a period of time.
