The Covid -19 pandemic has hit us all hard, but none more so than those who were already vulnerable and food insecure in the communities. This is evident in the number of requests that we have received from NPO’s and individuals, looking for relief from hunger. We have been asked by several of our stakeholders what we are doing to help the situation, and what each and every one of us can do as individuals.
1. FOOD FORWARD
We have supported this organisation for many years. They provide food relief for over 600 NPOs and are the beneficiaries of our World Hunger Month campaign, which kicks runs throughout the month of May. We are continuing to support them via our distribution centres and are aiming to donate 1 000 000 meals in May.
We have identified several stores in various regions that are acting as a collection point for Meals on Wheels. This organisation, which is over 50 years old, feeds the elderly and vulnerable. We are encouraging our customers to donate non-perishable foods which are then distributed in the needy communities.
www.kolisifoundation.org : This is a new foundation, founded by our Rugby World Cup-winning captain Siya and his wife, Rachel. We have undertaken to feed 400 children in Joe Slovo Park in Milnerton and Mitchells Plein. Another 500 families will be receiving food parcels in Zwide, in the Eastern Cape.
5. CONTINUATION of the support to our local store affiliated organisations
In addition, we are continuing to support the organisations that are linked to each of our stores. eEach Food Lover’s Market store supports an organisation, within 5km of their location, and commits to doing so for a full year. These organisations are committed to the care of children. As Earth Lovers, we support by caring for their nutritional needs. Each store supplies fresh fruit and vegetables to ensure that the children are well-fed, especially through this difficult time in which school feeding schemes have been disrupted.
This is our annual flagship project, which is more relevant this ever before in the light of the COVID-19 crisis. In 2019 our collaboration with partners resulted in over 914 000 meals donated to Food Forward SA and this year we are aiming to fund 1 million meals. Our partners’ contributions include 1.5kg bags of TRU-CAPE apples or pears, 1.5l SIMPL juice, 7kg bags of Crestshelf potatoes, a box of Westfalia Avocados and a 6kg ZZ2 box of tomatoes – when purchased in-store these products each go towards contributing a meal to a family in need through Food Forward SA. On 28th May 2020, World Hunger Day, Food Lovers Market will donate 1% of our turnover to this campaign.
Thank you all for your support of our Earth Lovers initiatives. There has never been a time that we are more needed by our people and our communities.
LOOKING FOR A SPONSOR OR DONATION?
We are unable to assist individuals during this time. Should you be an NPO specialising in food security, we would like to encourage you to apply to FoodForward South Africa to be listed as a beneficiary organisation. Further information is available on their website www.foodforwardsa.org.
