Cauliflower and Lentil Curry for babies 6 months +

Have you ever thought of making curry for your baby of 6+ months?  @the_green_dietitan recommends getting them started on tasty foods, that the whole family can eat. The difference is to add salt to the adult portion after the food is cooked, so that baby gets the unsalted version.

Jessica Kotlowitz, Registered Dietitian MSc. Nutr. (a.k.a The Green Dietitian) shares top tips for feeding babies 6 months and older, and makes this delicious cauliflower and lentil curry; a super nutritious meal for the whole family!

This recipe is vegan, plant-based, and gluten-free. It is a nutritionally balanced meal, but if you would like to add meat protein, you may add some pieces of chicken.

  • 1 cup brown lentils, soaked overnight.
  • 1 onion, grated or pulsed in food processor.
  • 2 garlic cloves, grated or crushed.
  • 1 inch fresh ginger, peeled + grated.
  • 2 carrots, peeled + grated or pulsed in food processor
  • 200g spinach, finely chopped or pulsed in food processor.
  • 1 head cauliflower, cut into florets.
  • 1 tomato, grated or pulsed in food processor.
  • 1 tbsp mild curry powder (e.g. Raja).
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tbsp olive or canola oil for cooking
  • 1 tin of coconut milk
  • 4 cups water (+ optional 4 cubes low sodium veg stock)
  • 1 Cup White Basmati rice, cooked


  1. Saute onion, garlic and ginger in the oil until softened.
  2. Then add spices and curry powder. Saute for another 2 minutes.
  3. Add grated tomato and saute until soft (about 5 mins).
  4. Add the carrots, lentils, water/ stock, cauliflower and coconut milk. Simmer for 20 mins until lentils and carrots are cooked through.
  5. Lastly, stir in the spinach and simmer until wilted.
  6. Serve with cooked basmati rice and a slice of fresh fruit for baby.. For adults/ older kids: can add some salt after serving.
