On 6 December, the 32nd annual Calypso Cricket Festival took place at Sunrise Beach in Muizenberg, Cape Town. Run by Sporting Chance, a long-term partner and beneficiary organisation that FLM supports, the event uses sport to bring about social change and life skills education to children in vulnerable communities, while offering them the opportunity to learn the skills of cricket in a fun and uplifting environment.
In addition to showing children the value of sport in building a positive future, the initiative also offers an ideal platform for identifying and nurturing natural talent, which can lead to high school bursaries. This year’s festival brought great enjoyment to 500 children aged 9-15 years of age from communities across the Western Cape – Ocean View to Khayelitsha and everywhere in between. It was incredibly heartwarming to see the children’s excitement as they participated and for many of them, some of whom had never seen the sea before, Calypso Cricket has become a highlight in their lives. FLM provided all the snacks and beverages for the day, including fresh fruit, energy bars, hot dogs, popcorn, and treats. In addition, we donated funds to the organisation so that they can continue to run their sports clinics throughout the year.
