As part of our drive to be the best store in every community we serve, our focus extends far beyond just offering the Best in Fresh and an amazing shopping experience. We believe that it means being actively involved with the communities that we serve by helping them thrive, particularly for those that are vulnerable and where malnutrition in young children is prevalent.
One way in which we are doing this is through store-led relationships with local child-centric organisations. Each FLM store supports a child-centered Beneficiary Organisation (BO) in their immediate community through feeding schemes and donations. This is a major focus for us – building connections with these child-centric groups in our communities and inspiring our colleagues to make a positive difference in the lives of the kids we’re helping.
Both our inland and costal region stores support their chosen BOs on a regular basis through the donation of fresh produce. In the inland region, 23 stores support 23 beneficiary organisations, of which 40% cater to babies, 55% cater to children aged 3+, and 1% represent a soup kitchen catering to several impoverished communities. In our coastal region, 17 stores support organisations who support Early Childhood Development (ECD) and child and youth care centres.
Shining a spotlight on the remarkable work these organisations do, each week we’ll be sharing more about the beneficiary organisations our stores support.
This week, we’re highlighting Legae Child Care Centre, in the North West province of South Africa, the BO of FLM Megacity.
A registered NPO and drop-in centre, Legae Child Care Centre provides a daily meal to vulnerable children (especially orphans and those living on the street) from impoverished areas of Mahikeng, such as Lonely Park, Top Village, Signal Hill, Golf View, and New Stands.
To assist them in serving over 3,500 nutritional meals a month (150-200 children during the school quarter and 300+ children during school holidays), FLM Megacity donates fresh produce and groceries every month. Their aim is to get children off the streets, get them back into school and ensure that each child has enough food, clean clothes, and adequate educational, emotional and social developmental support to complete school successfully, all while in a caring and safe environment.
