This week, as part of our ongoing series highlighting the inspirational beneficiary organisations our stores support within their local communities, we’re shining a spotlight on the Breakthrough Foundation, supported by FLM Alberton , a fitting choice as we celebrate Random Acts of Kindness this month.
The Breakthrough Foundation serves as an after-school sports and homework care center, providing a feeding program for Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres and pre-schools in the vulnerable and impoverished informal settlements and townships surrounding Alberton in Gauteng. Additionally, the foundation offers hygiene essentials for these centers.
A unique aspect of their model involves engaging elderly women within the communities. By identifying a Granny in the neighborhood, the Breakthrough Foundation encourages them to teach children in their ECD programme the importance of Random Acts of Kindness. This includes providing grocery items and assisting with household cleaning for the chosen Granny.
The foundation, which feeds approximately 90 children, depends greatly on donors and community support to maintain its initiatives. To assist with this, Food Lover’s Market Alberton provides the organisation with monthly donations in the form of fresh fruit and vegetable combos and cleaning products to the value of R2,000.
