Food Lover’s Market has been working with and supporting Food Forward SA (formerly Food Bank SA) since they first set up shop. We strongly identify with their vision, which is ‘a South Africa without Hunger’. Every day, 14 million South Africans go hungry and this is why we have become part of the movement to redistribute surplus food to non-profit organisations (NPOs) that, together, feed thousands of hungry people daily. Our support, however, does not stop there. We realise that quantities of surplus food can vary dramatically but that the same number of NPOs rely on this food to feed hungry people. That is why we’ve committed to topping up our contributions to ensure that we are able to keep providing a regular amount on a regular basis.
In March, we extended our partnership from the Western Cape (where last year we provided over 500,000 meals) to include KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. The results have been tremendous with almost 350,000 meals having been donated in just five months. This equates to more than 230,000 in the Western Cape, around 70,000 in KZN, and just over 45,000 in the Eastern Cape.
Our goal is to provide at least one million meals a year once we roll out in Gauteng and Pretoria.
The Bag for Life Initiative
We have recently launched the ‘Bag for Life’ initiative in stores. Customers will be able to purchase a ‘Bag for Life’ and R1 from each sale will go directly to Food Forward SA to further support their work but also to reduce the use of single-use plastic carrier bags. Please encourage customers to purchase a bag and make a difference.
