What is there to know about pesto? Jules Harris, artisanal chef, food philosopher and owner of The Real Food Factory, and creator of the Food Lover’s house brand pesto has answered some of the most common questions about pesto.

What is pesto?

Typically a bright green sauce, or paste originating in Genoa, Italy. It now has many ingredient configurations. It is both ancient and modern and most importantly absolutely delicious.

What is pesto made from?

Traditionally made from basil, nuts, garlic and olive oil. It is a flavourful sauce that can be made from a variety of herbs and nuts. Our range has basil, sundried tomato & shiitake, hemp seed and coriander and, rocket and hemp seed. It often contains parmesan cheese, but the Food Lover’s brand is 100% plant-based while retaining all the powerful flavours.

Is pesto healthy for you?

We like to think so! It is great to get a variety of whole plant foods in your diet. With fats from nuts and plant oils, it contains the healthy-heart kind of fats. Those with nut allergies need to be aware of pesto. Our pesto also has no preservatives. Like everything, it is to be enjoyed in moderation, which is no problem and it is so full of flavour.

We can dive into each ingredient – basil, tomato, shiitake mushrooms, profoundly hemp seeds, but we can leave that up to you.

How long does pesto last in the fridge?

You can keep the pesto for a week, once opened. Be sure to keep it refrigerated.

Can you freeze pesto?

Pesto freezes very well. Our pesto is suitable for home freezing for a few months.

Which pasta is best for pesto?

Gnocchi. Pesto goes with most kinds of pasta, and even a slice of bread! But many restaurants the Real Food Factory supplies serve it with gnocchi.
